Dream — Jesus as Catalyst:
In Luke 2–6, Jesus functions as a Catalyst, sparking the imagination of ordinary people, disrupting the status quo of the religious elite, unearthing latent potential, and beginning to plant the initial seeds of the dream of a Jesus movement.

Question to consider in the Dream Phase

  • Where is God sparking our imagination and compelling us to move toward the vision that he is revealing?

Discover — Jesus as Coach:
In Luke 7–11, Jesus calls together a small group and acts as their Coach, providing experiential learning as they stand at his shoulder and walk in his dust. He teaches, heals, and interacts with individuals and the crowds, and the disciples have a front-row seat. They learn through discussion and hands-on experience. Over time, Jesus increases their responsibility, and they discover as they go.

Question to consider in the Discover Phase

  • Where do we need to allow God to strip away the known and familiar and reveal fresh paths and insights about the way forward?

Design— Jesus as Challenger:
In Luke 12–21, Jesus begins to talk of the future. As a Challenger, he uses parables to move the disciples toward becoming leaders as well as disciples. Core principles embedded within the parables frame the worldview and behaviors of the disciples and are the design of the movement that he will commission them to extend.

Question to consider in the Design Phase

  • What do we discern are the principles and patterns that can be contextualized in many people and places, and how can these be communicated effectively?

Deploy — Jesus as Champion:
From Luke 22 onwards and into Acts, through Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension, he becomes a Champion as he resources his disciples with everything they need to further the work without his physical presence. The disciples shift from apprentice leaders to movement- makers empowered by the Spirit. They are commissioned to extend the movement themselves, taking the kingdom dream Jesus had planted and the kingdom design he had taught them to new people and places.

Question to consider in the Deploy Phase

  • How are we going to pass on our learning, embed and reproduce our DNA in others, and scale in a healthy and sustainable way?
